Birthday boy

alwaysamyToday is Jake's 15th birthday. For irrational reasons, it seems much older than 14 did, and that felt old at the time.
It was a lowkey day. He's still not feeling well, so we put off going out to dinner (the one thing he wanted to do) until next week, at his request. Also postponed cake, which was probably more disappointing to me. He got, and has already partly spent, of course, birthday money.
He's taller than ever. Stephen and my dad keep advising that he should put off shaving as long as possible, but he's got the beginnings of a fuzzy little goatee on his chin. Very disconcerting. He's either lost some weight, or it's the height, but he's leaner than ever.
And more mature. Not completely, not in every way, but he's only 15. Which, I remind myself as often as I remind the hulking boy who leans down to hug me now, is still a child in a lot of fundamental ways.
What's frightening, and so trite as to be nearly meaningless, is how quickly the years pass. He was just Ben's age, and Sara's, yesterday. I swear it.
