About an hour ago, I finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Gah! And OMGWTF!?$&! More on that in a minute.

Also, managed to catch the Serenity trailer on SciFi, at the tail end of a Firefly episode. Wheee! Sara was done with her bedtime milk and muttering about night-night, but I stayed to watch, and actually said, "Wheeee!" at the end of it. She giggled. God, it looks fantastic. Jake and I will be going to see it as soon as it's out.

Onto Harry. There are spoilers behind the cut

I'll admit, I have been known to cry during Hallmark commercials, but I sobbed at the end of the book. It was very hard to believe that Dumbledore was really truly dead. The merpeople, the phoenix's song, the centaurs, the tomb. Hagrid! God, it could have been too much, but it wasn't.

A few thoughts on his death, though. I do think he's dead, because the curse he put on Harry lifted on its own. And his portrait appeared in his office, which is another sign. But the portrait is something I hadn't thought of before. He'll still be able to communicate with the others, even...well, dead.

And Snape...Stephen said that what he came away with initially is that Harry's instincts are always right, even if his actual information is sometimes sketchy. I almost believe this, but as we talked about it, we both realized that there are still too many indications that Snape is *not* evil. Or not entirely, anyway.

Dumbledore isn't usually that far off the mark when it comes to understanding others. Dumbledore seemed to know he was dying, and it was perhaps in the plan all along for Snape to kill him, so Malfoy wouldn't have to -- he insisted that Harry bring him to Snape, not Madame Pomfrey. Snape freaked when Harry called him a coward -- he isn't a coward if he had to go through with killing a man he admired, for the greater good.

We'll have to see, of course. It was interesting to find that Snape was the Half-Blood Prince -- I hadn't caught onto that, thinking it was possibly Voldemort, but I feel like I should have guessed it. I was pleasantly surprised that Fleur stuck by Bill, and I enjoyed seeing Ginny and Harry together. Now we just have to get Ron and Hermione to the same place.

I'm terrified to read the next book, because it will be the last, and because so many heartbreaking things could happen. Just the ending here was chilling -- no more Hogwarts (possibly) and Harry electing not to come back, no matter what. And Ron and Hermione joining him! I'm predicting that a lot of the book will be set at Grimmauld Place, since it's Harry's and they'll need a base of operations. And if they're not in school, there will be plenty of time to hunt down the remaining Horcruxes -- and kill Voldemort. Eek.

And we only have what? Another two and half years to wait for Book Seven! Sigh.
